Retrieve your birth certificateYour birth certificate contains important details about your identity, such as your full name, date of birth, place of birth, gender, and parents’ names. This document is accepted as proof of citizenship and identity by just about every local, state, and federal government agency. A copy of your birth certificate may be needed to apply for a drivers license, passport, or travel visa. Parents will typically need copies of their children’s birth certificates in order to enroll them in school. Needless to say, if you have lost, misplaced, or accidentally damaged your birth certificate, you could have a real problem on your hands. Fortunately, you can get a copy of your birth certificate quickly and easily simply by contacting Certified Field Agent

Where to Look for Your Birth Certificate

Because birth certificates and other vital personal records are not kept by the federal government but by the states, the office responsible for your birth certificate may be located clear across the country from where you are now, or even in one of our overseas possessions if you were born in Puerto Rico or Guam. Most states have one centralized records office that deals with birth certificates, while others may have multiple offices in different counties or districts. In order to get a copy of your birth certificate on your own, you must first figure out what office is holding it. You can visit the CDC website to view a list of these offices and then write to them directly. Or, you can allow Certified Field Agent to handle this whole process for you. We’ll contact the appropriate office on your behalf and direct them to send your birth certificate.

Types of Birth Certificates

Before you request your birth certificate, make sure you know which type of certificate you need. Some states have an option to request an uncertified birth certificate or a certified one. The uncertified certificate may be an abstract that will not necessarily meet your needs. It is better to always request a certified copy, as this type of birth certificate will be accepted for all official purposes. You can identify a certified birth certificate by the raised or embossed seal and registrar’s signature.
