You and your soon-to-be spouse just need to appear in person at the courthouse, city hall, or town office and sign the marriage license application in the presence of a county or town clerk. In addition to bringing the funds to pay the marriage license fee, there are also certain documents that you will need to bring. Keep reading to learn more!

Identity Establishing Documents

When you present yourself to apply for a marriage license you will need proof of identity and age. You can do this with several different documents, including a current driver’s license, state-issued picture I.D., government-issued photo I.D., certified copy or original birth certificate, U.S. Passport, Foreign Passport, or a Military I.D.

Proof of Residency

Most states do not require you to live in the state where you are applying for a marriage license. However, if the state that you are applying for a marriage license in does have a residency requirement, you will need to present proof of residency.

Previous Marriage Documentation

If this is not your first marriage you will also need to present proof that any and all previous marriages are legally terminated. You can do this by presenting an original or certified copy of your divorce decree or divorce judgment.
